Two PCs, One Screen!

I recently found out about a great invention called a KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) Switch. I used this hardware device at my last job to allow a single keyboard, video monitor and mouse to control more than one computer at the same time.  I was able to control two computers with one screen and Hot Key Control enabled me to switch ports easily using simple keyboard commands, so I could control which computer I used.

Although I was baffled at first (it doesn’t take much!), I got to grips with it quickly.  I didn’t fully appreciate the benefits as I had never really felt the need to work with two computers, but I was involved on an important project with a tight deadline and soon discovered that with its built-in data transfer function, the KVM Switch also works like a data cable that enables you to move information between two PCs.

So I suppose it’s about less clutter and more control ( a rule I should really be applying to my wardrobe!). Since then, I haven’t had the need for a KVM Switch, but I believe they’re popular with people who’ve upgraded their home PC systems and want to still use their old computers without investing in a second keyboard, monitor and mouse.  KVM switches are also used by business to save money when one person uses more than one computer.  At the end of the day, it always seems to come down to cash!
